This is the second time I'm cranking out a recap because I'm up early and can! I'm in such a hurry I'm not gonna retake John and Arnold's pictures even though I think their eyes are closed. We're lucky I took pictures at all. |

Doesn't MLB Team Names? play right into John's wheelhouse? Isn't it he who told the story of catching a foul ball while selling beer at a game? His sweep of the category was a sign of things to come.
I got this triple-stumper in TV Supporting Casts: "Vic Tayback as Mel, Polly Holliday as Flo (there was a lot of grits-kissing)." Amanda and Arnold gave too much information, and Arnold's response was laughable (sorry).
At the first break and after his sweep, John had gotten 3 right and one wrong and had 3000. Amanda had gotten one right and one wrong and was in the hole 200. Arnold had gotten 3 right and one wrong and had 1600.
After answering 2 right and one wrong, John found the Daily Double of the round in Naval Vessels. He had 3400 then while Amanda and Arnold had their same scores as at the break. John wagered 2000 on this clue: "USS Hazard was this type of WWII ship that looked for hazards, specifically explosive ones." John and I got it.
Okay, so look at this: John had 9200 at the end of the round, while Amanda and Arnold had 1800 and 600 respectively. Ouch. John had gotten 6 right and one wrong since his Daily Double. Amanda had gotten 4 right, and Arnold had gotten one wrong.
I counted this wrong but I'm thinking maybe I needn't have, in I "NV" You: "This adjective meaning undefeatable & unconquerable was often applied to the Spanish Armada." I said "inviolable." Acceptable? I got this triple-stumper in the same category: "A popular wallflower in warm climates, it's the colorful shrub seen here."
I believe John had gotten 10 right and one wrong when he found the Daily Double in The 8 Planets. He had 16400 while Amanda, who'd gotten 3 right and 2 wrong, had 2200 and Arnold still had 600. John wagered 4000 on this clue: "Since it was discovered in 1846, it has completed only one orbit around the sun." He and I got it.
This is my favorite clue of the day, in Americana: "Scholars have mapped the U.S. based on what people in each region call soft drinks like Coke and ginger ale. In the highlighted areas here, they use the word 'pop.' In these areas here, they use this word." Fun!
Guess who found the next Daily Double, in Americana. John. He'd gotten 3 right since the last one and had...wait for it...25200. Mr. Trebek said to him, "You don't even want me to tell you the lead you have at the moment." John said "No. Thank you" and wagered 5000. Amanda had gotten one right and one wrong and had 1800. Arnold had gotten one right and had 1000. There were 5 clues left on the board after this one. Here's the clue: "A cruise ship called the Spirit of Ethan Allen III provides narrated tours of this large scenic lake." John and I didn't get this one.
Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with 4 clues left to play. The last clue remained covered. Amanda got 2 more right and ended with 5400. John got one wrong and had 18200, and Arnold still had 1000.
The Final Jeopardy category was Island Countries. This was the clue: "No longer 'Western,' this 1-word nation has moved to the west side of the intl. date line to join Asia & Australia." Okay, if I can get this one instantly anyone can. Yet it was a triple-stumper. Arnold lost everything. Amanda lost all but a dollar. John lost 4200 but we'll see him again of course.
If this episode felt long to me, it must have been the longest half-hour of Amanda and Arnold's lives. But here's hoping John wins again next time. Actually as I'm finishing this it's time for the new episode. If I count "inviolable" as a neg, my Coryat this episode was 18800 (23400 without negs).
