Andy here with the first recap of May! I'm headed to my first MLB game of the season this evening - the Jays and Red Sox at the Rogers Centre!

John Anneken and Deborah Smith are the two challengers today to Larry Krajewski, who won $38,200 in his first two games!

J! round categories:
TRAVEL & TOURISM
PULITZER-WINNING NOVELS
RING MAGAZINE'S GREATEST TITLE FIGHTS
THE DAILY QUADRUPLE
THE MOST POPULOUS NATION
MY INVENTION WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME

Larry went straight into TITLE FIGHTS. The biggest surprise for me in that category was that this clue was valued $1,000: The 1941 bout between Billy Conn & this "Brown Bomber". I use "Brown Bomber" as a giveaway for Joe Louis? Also, did you know he played on the PGA Tour after his boxing career?

John did very well on the buzzer under THE MOST POPULOUS NATION; in fact, he ran the category! By the end of 15 clues, we had scores of:

John $5,800
Larry $200
Deborah $0

John's a beer vendor at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati! He's apparently caught one foul ball in 10 years selling beer there.

The Daily Double was in MY INVENTION WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME for $1,000. Scores were:

John $7,000
Larry $200
Deborah $0

John bet $4,000. His clue: On Oct. 15, 1863 this Confederate & 7 others sank on the sub that bore his name. John wasn't able to get the right Confederate (he said "Harris"), and he fell to $4,000.

There were 2 clues left on the board this J! round, and at the end of it, we had scores of:

John $5,000
Larry $1,200
Deborah $600

DJ! round categories:
"C" BIRDS
AN ANTONYM OF
MY 3 SONGS
DEFINING THE UNDEFINABLE
STOP & SMELL
THE ROOSEVELTS

I'm sure John's fellow vendors will give him a hard time for this Triple Stumper (AN ANTONYM OF $600): ...secretive is this, also a ballpark food. If you're ever in Detroit, get your franks from Charlie, the Singing Hot Dog Man -- just remember, there's no ketchup in baseball!

Larry had a chance to get himself back into the game when he picked up the first Daily Double of the round under THE ROOSEVELTS $1200! Scores were:

John $8,200
Larry $3,600
Deborah $600

He bet $3,000. His clue: TR was the first President to leave the U.S. while in office, traveling to this Central American country in 1906.. Larry gave the correct response immediately and found himself at $6,600!

After going through STOP & SMELL and most of "C" BIRDS, the BIRD category had the Daily Double at $1600! Scores were:

John $11,800
Larry $11,000
Deborah -$1,800

Larry just bet $2,000. His clue: One story has it that this duck got its name from being shipped in sacks with labels asking that the sack be returned. Larry had no idea and he fell to $9,000.

From there, John picked up his buzzer mojo again, but couldn't quite pick up the $2,000 clue in MY 3 SONGS (In the '70s: "Ain't No Sunshine", "Lean On Me", "Use Me"). John really should have tried!

Scores going into Final:

John $17,800
Larry $9,400
Deborah -$2,200

FJ! category: THE THEATRE

FJ! clue: Dramatizing a murder from the year 1170, a 1935 T. S. Eliot play aptly had its first performance in this English city

Larry 9400 + 9400 = 18800
John 17800 + 1111 = 18911

John's the champion, he'll be back to defend, and I'll be back to write about it! See you then!
