Dave Treptow, a technical project manager from Milwaukee, WI
Sean Anderson, a law professor from Champaign, IL(2-day champ, $48,300)

Jayne 10200 -10200 = 0

I know I said yesterday I need to track my Coryat every time so I watch the show, but I failed to again today.

Today's contestants:

Nikki Grillos, a freelance associate casting director from New York, NY
Chris Lastrapes, a business developer from Tulsa, OK
Sean Anderson, a law professor from Champaign, IL(3-day champ, $71,600)

As of now, Sean has displaced Darren Harris-Fain as the Tournament of Champions alternate. If Sean wins this game, he qualifies for the Tournament of Champion, bumping Michael Bilow to alternate.

This brings me to something that I'd like to editorialize about. It saddened me a little bit to see the disappointment on some of people talking before taping about not being able to see Darren because of his being bumped from the group last-minute. Putting myself in Sean's situation as someone who was in the pool, and for whom the possibility of "getting The Call, bumping someone from the ToC field, and then surprising everyone" was within the realm of happenings, it made me sad to think that there might be disappointment at possibly seeing someone like Sean at the Tournament.

Okay, sorry about that, on with the game!

Bit of a low-scoring game, with lots of ups and downs!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Sean $8,400
Nikki $7,600
Chris $7,400

Final Jeopardy! category: POPULAR PSYCHOLOGY TERMS

Final Jeopardy! clue: Anna Freud wrote, “The infantile ego resorts to” this behavior “in order not to become aware of some painful impression”

Chris 7400 - 5700 = 1700
Nikki 7600 + 7201 = 14801 (winner!)
Sean 8400 - 6801 - 1599

...and Michael Bilow breathes a sigh of relief.

Just a note from Andy before Jeanie does tonight's recap:

Jenny on tonight's episode, being Canadian, is an alumna of Reach For The Top up here in Canada, which has been our country's major high school quiz competition since the 1960s. Last night, as part of the organization's 50th anniversary, I attended the launch announcement of the Reach For The Top Foundation, a charitable organization to provide bursaries for exceptional Canadian high school students.

Reach For The Top has meant a great deal to me personally, and I doubt that I'd be involved as heavily in what I do now without it.

I also know that many of our Canadian readers are Reach alumni, and Reach wants to hear from all alumni!

Reach For The Top alumni can register to receive news about 50th anniversary events!

You can find the Reach For The Top Foundation here!

Okay, now onto Jeanie:

Today's contestants:

Jenny Gu, a medical student from Toronto, ON, Canada
Sam Stubblefield, a hospital pediatrician from Wilmington, DE
Ryan Mewett, a naval officer from Plano, TX (1-day champ, $28,801)
Final Jeopardy category: International Sports

Final Jeopardy clue: "Its name refers to safety efforts that currently restrict cylinder capacity & prohibit supercharging."

Ryan 13800 + 13800 = 27600

Sam 23300 + 4301 = 27601 (winner)

Today's contestants:

Ken Hill, a nuclear power plant inspector from Maudlin, SCMike Barrett, a cashier and writer from Medford, MASam Stubblefield, a hospital pediatrician from Wilmington, DE (1-day champ, $27,601)
I found this episode more watchable than most, but maybe it was because I thought it was about time for such an episode. How about you? I've gotten to thinking it's the contestants.
Look what I found about Ken when I was looking for him to be a panelist.

Final Jeopardy category: Art History

Final Jeopardy clue: "Although it's a statue of a giant's foe, an observer who saw its 1504 unveiling called it 'the marble giant.'" No-brainer.

Sam 10400 + 10241 = 20641

Mike 15600 + 5201 = 20801 (winner)
Ken 7800 + 7799 = 15599

Today's contestants:

Sadie Iverson, a graduate student from Ventura, CA
Laura Ashby, an attorney from Marietta, GA
Mike Barrett, a cashier and writer from Medford, MA(1-day champ, $20,801)
Laura is coming to our next panel on Sunday at 3:30 Central.
Today and yesterday I have had a lot more to say about the episodes than in a long time, but I am still too unmotivated. Maybe next week I will actually do it. Oh, I just remembered next week is the ToC! I still have not asked someone who attended to write next week's posts for a firsthand perspective, but I've known who I want to ask since before the tournament taped. It seems, on Facebook anyway, that he is out of town. If you're reading this and were in the audience for the ToC, drop me a line any way you want.

Final Jeopardy category: Children's Lit

Final Jeopardy clue: "As she arrived at the house of her new employer, 'the wind seemed to catch her up into the air and fling her' at the door." I read this book as a kid and was highly entertained.

Mike 9200 + 6601 = 15801

So we can get a recap up quickly, I'm entering the final and results, and Andy will fill in commentary after he can see the show. By the way, I'm still looking for anyone who attended the tournament in person, to give us a behind-the-scenes perspective!

Today's quarterfinalists:
Dan Feitel
Catherine Hardee
Vaughn Winchell
Final Jeopardy category: American Authors

Final Jeopardy clue: "He was the first to have both fiction & nonfiction No. 1 New York Times best sellers; the latter featured his beloved poodle." This was a Teen Jeopardy final in my opinion.

Dan 7800 + 6200 = 14000
Vaughn 17200 - 601 = 16599
Catherine 17800 - 200 = 17600

Wild card standings:
M: Catherine Hardee
1. Vaughn Winchell $16,599
2. Dan Feitel $14,000

My notes:

  • I found both Catherine and Vaughn to have VERY impressive performances. Both of them confidently answered clues that had me going "What on earth is going on here?"
  • There felt like a whole boatload of shoutouts to various Jeopardy fans, from the "Iago" clue to the "Gnash" one!
  • Congratulations to Dan Feitel on his engagement! (though, this story did leak before the Tournament).
  • Jeanie said this was a "Teen Tournament final". I heartily disagree - and I suspect Vaughn and Catherine would say the same!
  • Thoughts on the Final Jeopardy! betting: I thought Dan's threshold of $14,000 was a *little* bit high, but I also can't really fault him too much for that, either. Loved both Vaughn's and Catherine's bets (though Catherine's position was ripe for the Thomas Jefferson bet.)

Like yesterday, Andy will fill in his commentary later, below.

Today's contestants:
Greg Seroka
Brennan Bushee
Kristin Sausville

Final Jeopardy category: Inaugural Addresses

Final Jeopardy clue: "His first address spoke of 'the present happy state,''our peculiar felicity'& our 'happy government.'"
Greg 13000 - 1500 = 11500
Brennan 12000 + 6000 = 18000 (winner)
Kristin 12800 - 0 = 12800

Wild card standings:
M: Catherine Hardee
T: Brennan Bushee
W: TBD
Th: TBD
F: TBD
1. Vaughn Winchell $16,599
2. Dan Feitel $14,000
3. Kristin Sausville $12,800
4. Greg Seroka $11,500
--

  • My thoughts:
  • It seems to me that Greg and Brennan were both making mincemeat of the buzzer, especially early on; glad Kristin was able to make a charge, though!
  • Alex undercounted the number of single-player Final Jeopardy! episodes. There have been a lot more than two!
  • On many of Kristin's negs, I found myself saying many of the same things!
  • I was disappointed by the clue ordering in the NICKNAMES FOR FEMINISTS category; I thought that $2,000 was much easier than $1,200 and $1,600!
  • THESE SCORES, THOUGH. The writers have brought the hard stuff - and the players have been up to the challenge so far!

Here's the recap from the third of five quarterfinals - the first I've been able to watch "live"! If you watched our #JeopardyLivePanel ToC Preview episode on Sunday, you heard it slip out that this episode took NINETY MINUTES to tape!

Also, Kaya Chua (contestant from last season and multiple #JeopardyLivePanel panellist) was in the audience for the semifinals and finals, and has agreed to provide some audience-person thoughts next week for our coverage! I'm really looking forward to the insight!

Today's contestants:
Matt Jackson
John Schultz
Jennifer Giles

I can't believe these scores in the tournament so far! The players have certainly been up to the task! Also, any category where your possible response lines are "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer" and "Tinker, Evers, and Chance" are A-OK in my book!

I've seen a few comments as well that tonight's game was too easy. What do you think? Leave a comment!

Also, some insight as to why the game took 90 minutes to tape:

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Matt $24,900
John $17,800
Jennifer $10,400

Final Jeopardy! category: ABBREVIATIONS

Final Jeopardy! clue: Its meaning as an individual product dates to 1977; its meaning as conforming to orthodox opinion dates to 1986

Jennifer 10400 - 6600 = 3800
John 17800 - 2800 = 15000
Matt 24900 - 2 = 24898

Throwback Thursday - Andy's First Guest-Post (March 26, 2012)

Hey everyone, Andy here! I realized that I haven't put forth a "Throwback Thursday" post in awhile. Remember when Jeanie was on the show? Being that she'd seen the shows during her week from the audience, she brought in a number of guest-posters! Two days before her airdate, and about a year and a half before the advent of Keith Williams' The Final Wager, I put forth a guest post on wagering strategy here on The Jeopardy! Fan.

My favorite quote from the post: And it's better to get over the "OMGMATH?!?!" block earlier than "it's Final Jeopardy! and the contestant coordinators are harassing me to lock a bet in."

Here's the full post: Scrabble-Rouser. It's interesting to see how far we've come, haven't we?

Since starting #JeopardyLivePanel, I've really found that the Tournament of Champions has quickly become my favourite two weeks of the year! I think it's because we've gotten to know these champions much better than some of the other regular contestants, and it makes it that much more exciting to cheer for everybody!

Today's contestants:
Kerry Greene
Andrew Haringer
Elliot Yates

Some thoughts:

  • There were quite a few negs early on from Andrew and Elliot!
  • In his interview, Elliot got recognized as "a famous person"
  • I felt transfixed by how close the game was in Double Jeopardy!; Elliot seemed like a fish out of water on the buzzer; Kerry and Andrew were just on another level!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:

Kerry 18000
Andrew 17200
Elliot 3600

Final Jeopardy! category: ARTISTS' SUBJECTS

Final Jeopardy! clue: The woman seen here who was born in North Carolina & died in England in 1881, was the subject of this painting

Elliot 3600 + 3600 = 7200
Andrew 17200 + 2200 = 19400
Kerry 18000 + 4000 = 22000

Wild card standings:

Our #JeopardyLivePanel Quarterfinal Review & Semifinal Preview will be taking place tomorrow night at 9:15 PM! Joining us, among others, are scheduled to be Dan Feitel and Kristin Sausville!

Meanwhile, there has been a lot of stumping to get Elliot onto the Clue Crew. To be honest, I like the idea, but won't someone think of my eligibility? :)

Today's contestants:
Michael Bilow
Scott Lord
Alex Jacob

It was a pretty heavy day out in the world, to say the least. Obviously, some people still feel they need their half-hour escape, leading to situations like this one:

It's not easy working at a TV station today!

Meanwhile, the opening, with J! leaving in comments about "the greys and the blacks" (referring to hair), led to the following:

The FALLING OFF A LOG category was an all-insect video category. I'm with Keith on this one:

Michael's shot at a True Daily Double early on in Double Jeopardy didn't quite pan out for him - but I, for one, applaud his aggression!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Alex $26,800
Scott $10,200
Michael $8,400

Final Jeopardy! category: GREEK MYTHOLOGY

Final Jeopardy! clue: Famous mother of Pyrrha, who survived the great flood and with her husband repopulated the earth

Michael 8400 - 8400 = 0 (Thisbe)
Scott 10200 - 4000 = 6200 (Demeter)
Alex 26800 - 143 = 26657 (Gaea)

Wild card standings:
M: Catherine Hardee
T: Brennan Bushee
W: Matt Jackson
Th: Kerry Greene
F: Alex Jacob
1. Andrew Haringer $19,400
2. Vaughn Winchell $16,599
3. John Schultz $15,000
4. Dan Feitel $14,000
--
5. Kristin Sausville $12,800
6. Greg Seroka $11,500
7. Elliot Yates $7,200
8. Scott Lord $6,400
9. Jennifer Giles $3,800
10. Michael Bilow $0

More thoughts: It appears as though, for the quarterfinals, the writers might have gone slightly easier than normal ToC level for the main games, but slightly harder than normal for Final Jeopardy. There wasn't a significant amount of movement in Final Jeopardy this week; I'm guessing that was because most players were above their wildcard threshold. For some, that worked. For others, it didn't.

But we have ourselves 9 semifinalists! Tune into the Live Panel on November 14 at 9:15 PM Eastern, and then catch the semifinals starting on Monday!
