Today's contestants:

Ernestine Gardner, an administrative assistant from South Bend, IN
John Kozempel, an I.T. consultant from Philadelphia, PA
Matt Jackson, a paralegal from Washington, DC(7-day champ, $190,601)

John came at Matt quite well early on! I thought he should have bet a little bit more on his Daily Double, but what can you do...

After the J! round:
Matt $8,000
John $8,000
Ernestine $600

Matt, of course, went into a second gear in Double Jeopardy - much as was described by Vicki on our last #JeopardyLivePanel!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Matt $36,800
John $4,400
Ernestine $3,000

Final Jeopardy! category: EUROPEAN AUTHORS

Final Jeopardy! clue: "to explain... Harry by the artless division into wolf and man is a hopelessly childish attempt", he wrote in 1927

Ernestine 3000 + 3000 = 6000
John 4400 - 1611 = 2789
Matt 36800 + 3209 = 40009 (8-day champion, $230,610)

Did Alex's talk about the upcoming ToC raise your eyebrows?
     Today's contestants:

Susan Thurman, a scholarship program director from Tucker, GA
Alison Burke, a tutor from Brooklyn, NY
Matt Jackson, a parelegal from Washington, DC(8-day champ, $230,610)

I wonder who the friend of Matt's is that came in 2nd in a college tournament.
I can't resist mentioning this puzzling triple-stumper in Sports Nobility: "This controversial head coach led Indiana to 3 NCAA hoops titles & the U.S. to a gold medal in 1984."
Andy warned me that Matt was going to make an interesting wager in Double Jeopardy. Matt said "5" plus something unintelligible, and Trebek said "5 it is." Closed captioning said Trebek's words were "$5,000 it is." When Matt got it wrong, in fact only $5 was deducted. I bet there was a stop in play. Susan and I are in touch and hopefully she can come to the next live panel. I'd also like to ask her why she said "Norway" after that same response was wrong for Matt!
I hoped Alison would wager more on her Daily Double! But here are the scores going into Final Jeopardy:
Matt 17395
Alison 9400
Susan 2400

Final Jeopardy category: Movie Characters

Final Jeopardy clue: "Charlton Heston's wardrobe in 1954's 'Secret of the Incas' inspired the clothes worn by this adventurous character 27 yrs later." Puhleeze. This was insta for me and I haven't even seen the movie.

Matt 17395 + 1406 = 18801 (winner!)
Alison 9400 + 7996 = 17396
Susan 2400 - 2300 = 100

     My Coryat was 15000.

Rewrite time! I had this long spiel done up making fun of Jeanie for having all sorts of pictures ready but she hadn't sent them along, and then she sent me an email with a bunch of pictures! Woohoo!

Remember these posts of Jeanie's from just after the Battle of the Decades tapings?

Andy here before Jeanie's recap:

Yes, Matt Jackson bet $5 yesterday. Not $5,000. A couple of things I want to share:

1) In yesterday's comment section, Elicia from tomorrow's game provided some excellent from-the-audience insight on what happened.

2) Matt explained the following on his on Facebook fan page:

A note to resolve some apparent confusion: I intended to wager five dollars (one Abe Lincoln) on my second Daily Double...

Back to Jeanie.

This has been one of those days where 4:30 couldn't come quickly enough.

     Today's contestants:

Sameer Rawal, an internal medicine resident from Toronto, ON, Canada
Erik Latshaw, a cellar hand from Los Angeles, CA
Matt Jackson, a paralegal from Washington, DC(9-day champ, $249,411)

I found Erik on Twitter but he didn't say anything after this:
I had to laugh with delight when Matt got his first Daily Double right.
Aren't there two Saarinens? Is this today's controversy?

Scores going into Final Jeopardy:
Matt 42400
Erik 12800
Sameer 3200

I loved Sameer's reaction when Trebek said Matt's score! What a good sport.

Final Jeopardy category: The European Union

Final Jeopardy clue: "Since Bulgaria joined in 2007, the E.U.'s 3 official alphabets have been our Latin one & these 2."

Sameer 3200 - 416

Erik 12800 + 6300
Matt 42400 - 2400 (winner; duh)

Trebek says he feared Matt wouldn't lose much?

Not gonna lie, I'm feeling a little bit on the disappointed side after the end of that Blue Jays game today!

Today's contestants:

Elicia Woerle, an interior architectural design student from Los Angeles, CAEmily Rollman, an attorney from Shawneetown, ILMatt Jackson, a paralegal from Washington, DC(10-day champ, $289,411)

Elicia found us a couple of days ago; I'm hoping she can make our next #JeopardyLivePanel!

Matt got off to a bit of slow start; he was actually in the minus for a few questions early on! For a brief moment, though, Matt recovered to the point that both Elicia and Emily were in position to give Matt a single-player Final, but Elicia managed to get her score above $0!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Matt 35000
Elicia 3600
Emily -1200

Final Jeopardy! category: VIDEO GAMES

Final Jeopardy! clue: As part of its 30th anniversary celebration in 2014, this video game used the slogan "We all fit together"

Elicia 3600 + 0 = 3600
Matt 35000 + 15000 = 50000 (11-day total, $339,411)

Welcome to another week of recaps! I've put my stats-man hat on and noticed that Matt had 319 correct responses in his first 11 games, and it's going to inspire a new feature I'll be working on!

Today's contestants:
Julia Novakovics, an archivist from Pittsburgh, PA
Victor Quillen, a career counsellor from Kingsport, TN
Matt Jackson, a paralegal from Washington, DC(11-day champ, $339,411)

Matt turned up the heat today, nailing $10,000 on a late Daily Double! No, I haven't charted the game yet to add to Matt's total of 319!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Matt $39,600
Victor $12,000
Julia $7,000

Final Jeopardy! category: HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS

Final Jeopardy! clue: Its restitchings over the centuries helped perpetuate the story of King Harold II being struck in the eye with an arrow

Julia 7000 + 3002 = 10002
Victor 12000 + 2001 = 14001

Comparing Matt Jackson to the Decade's Other Long Win Streaks: Part 1 (Correct Responses)

$

0

Matt Jackson won his 12th game last night. Our #JeopardyLivePanel discussions the past few episodes have centered around "how long will his streak last?" Let's look at the numbers.

I went to J! Archive and added up the number of correct responses of the five contestants who played in at least 12 regular games (that being, Ken Jennings, Julia Collins, David Madden, Arthur Chu, and Matt Jackson). Here are the numbers:

Number of Correct Responses over first 12 games
Data source: j-archive.com

Over Matt's first five games, he was only an average of just under three correct responses a game behind Ken (Ken's total 154, Matt 141), and ahead of Julia (110), David (136), and Arthur (120).

Looking at Ken's sixth through twelfth games, though, Ken seemed to find another gear, breaking 38 correct responses five times (Matt has only broken 30 twice). I would posit that this would be due to the extra buzzer familiarity that Ken had over his opposition at this point; since Ken's streak, the show has given new players significantly more buzzer rehearsal time. Matt has still had the second-best correct response count over Games 6 through 12. It would not surprise me in the least to see Matt surpass Julia's streak. I'm not sure how much he'll threaten Ken, though.

Part 2 of this comparison will look at the five players on Daily Doubles.

Comparing Matt Jackson to the Decade's Other Long Streaks - Part 2 (Other Statistics)

$

Here is Part 2

In Part 1, I compared Matt Jackson to Ken Jennings, Arthur Chu, David Madden, and Julia Collins in terms of their number of correct responses. Here is Part 2, where the five players are compared in terms of their performance on Daily Doubles, %age of lock games, and average Coryat score.

As you can see, Matt seems to have a very strong knowledge of what he knows and doesn't know, and is using that knowledge to maximum effect thus far on the Daily Doubles, picking up over $100,000 on those clues alone! Of course, the Daily Doubles are much higher-variance, so an opponent able to take out those Daily Doubles might certainly leave him more vulnerable.

Matt still has a higher Coryat score than Arthur, Julia, and David. Those streaks, however, were before The Final Wager and The Jeopardy! Fan brought strategy more into the forefront; information on how to end a long streak wasn't as readily available as it was even two years ago!

We'll see what happens tonight as Matt makes his 14th appearance.

Andy here! Interestingly enough, I met Sally from today's episode at the Kansas City auditions (we were staying at the same Airbnb). She had auditioned the day before, and I credit the chat I had with her in the morning before my own audition to be mostly responsible for how well things went for me on July 1! (Thank you so much, Sally.) Now on to the recap with Jeanie:

Today's contestants:

Sally Hatfield, an English as a Second Language instructor from Lakeview, MI
Michael Baker, a travel media editor from New York, NY
Matt Jackson, a paralegal from Washington, DC(13-day champ, $411,612)

Does Matt look tired to you today? And does Michael look like Mark Japinga behind his lectern?
Nice of Matt to own up to being wrongly credited with a correct response, after the Jeopardy round.
I tried to keep track of my Coryat, but somewhere I got lost and the last two clues on my Jeopardy board didn't match what was on the TV. Which means I got up and walked around during Double Jeopardy. ;-)

Final Jeopardy category: U.S. Landmarks

Final Jeopardy clue: "For its 50th anniv. in 2012, the roof of this landmark was temporarily repainted its original color, galaxy gold."
