Andy here with a recap of Thursday's episode!
Mike Shapiro and Rebecca Anderson are the challengers today for Bill Tolany, who has won $44,200 over his first 3 games. Today's his all-important 4th game, which will improve Bill's ToC chances considerably if he wins!
Rebecca will be doing a Q&A with Jeanie, so if you have any questions, let us know!
J! round categories:
HOSPITAL CORNERS
WHAT'S ON YOUR iPOD?
MATH APPEAL
FOODIE CALL
FRAGILE
THIS SIDE "UP"
Rebecca seems very tall to me! She also did very well in FOODIE CALL going 4/5!
I always get "commutative", "transitive", and "associative" mixed up in math, as evidenced by this MATH $1000 clue: "7 x (6 x 3) = (7 x 6) x 3 is an example of this law, meaning it doesn't matter which pair you multiply first". Doesn't help that a high school math teacher of mine ALSO got it mixed up for two months!
By the end of 15 clues (FOODIE, "UP", and MATH), the scores were:
Rebecca $3,400
Bill $1,600
Mike $-$800
Bill's in an investment club; 3 of the other members are Jeopardy! contestants! He also lost $1,200 as he said too much on an earlier THIS SIDE "UP" clue ("Casablanca" begins with an order to do this to "all suspicious characters and search them") -- he added "the usual suspects" and they eventually dinged him for it!
The Daily Double actually went unplayed in this round; it was under one of the 3 unplayed clues in HOSPITAL CORNERS! Scores at the end of the round were:
Bill $5,400
Rebecca $3,800
Mike -$200
DJ! round categories:
A DAY ON THE BOAT
LET IT SLIDE
OSCAR MIRE (Alex: Each correct response will be the name of someone who has never won a competitive Oscar.)
"P"OETS
ALBERTA
ANAGRAM PAIRS (Alex: Each response will be two words, and they will be anagrams of each other.)
(I like this board! I was hoping, though for some longer anagram pairs or groups like SLANTED DENTALS, SNORTED RODENTS, or SINTERED TRENDIES INSERTED NERDIEST RESIDENT.)
Bill had luck in OSCAR MIRE and Mike had luck in ANAGRAM PAIRS, and Mike got to play the first Daily Double, under "P"OETS $1600! Scores were:
Bill $12,200
Mike $5,000
Rebecca $4,200
Mike bet $2,500. His clue: This imagist became immersed in fascist politics while living in Italy. His correct response put him at $7,500!
A DAY ON THE BOAT $1600 had the final Daily Double, and it was Bill's! Scores:
Bill $12,200
Mike $10,700
Rebecca $4,200
Bill bet $2,000. Clue: "It's Feb. 17, 1864: This sub has just sunk the Housatonic with its spar torpedo, but she's not looking so good herself" Bill had just as much of a clue as I did (that being "none"), and his score fell to $10,200.
Alex gave the minute-to-go signal with about 8 clues left on the board (and most of ALBERTA). We did get through most of that category, though, leaving only the bottom clue! Mike and Bill traded correct responses over the final clues, trading the lead back and forth as well!
Scores going into Final:
Bill $13,800
Mike $12,300
Rebecca $3,400
FJ! category: ART IN THE U.S. CAPITOL
FJ! clue: Members of the Hungarian, Swedish & Israeli parliaments spoke when a bust of this foreign diplomat was unveiled
Rebecca 3400 - 3300 = 0
Mike 12300 - 8899 = 3401
Bill 13800 - 12300 = 1500
I got this Final -- only because the community center where the Toronto Scrabble Club meets is named after him. This was an incredibly tough final IMO -- probably one of the toughest of the season!
Mike Shapiro is now champion with $3,401 - and I'll have the recap of his title defense tomorrow!
