On Friday, Nolan Martch won his first episode in a somewhat unconvincing fashion. Were you guys expecting Mr. Trebek to say something to that effect when he clearly had something to say at the beginning of the show? No. He said something I hadn't heard. I'll just quote him, then: "Big doings starting one week from today. We start giving away the first of several fascinating expeditions in honor of our 30 years of Jeopardy! on the air." That's all he had to say about that, but he did say that Nolan's winnings of $2000 were an "anomaly." Can Nolan flex his muscles today?
I thought Bill would be negged eventually for adding an "s" to the name on this clue in Beers to You!, read by Sarah: "American visitors to Australia have a great heritage. In 1886, two New York City brothers with this name arrived, built a brewery and went home, but they've been quenching Aussie thirsts ever since."
The next clue was the first of many triple-stumpers I got, this time in Also a Zodiac Sign: "Ford has an SEL model of it." In fact I swept the category. I believe Bill got 4 of the 5.
Sharon found the first Daily Double of the round in Well, I'm Warm-blooded.

For fun I decided to count the number of times Sharon said "okay" in the episode. This was the first. She wagered 1000 on this clue: "This porcupine-like mammal doesn't turn into a ball to roll quickly & gain video game points, but it does eat snakes & birds." I was very surprised she got this. I got it too. At the first break:

A rare 3 good anecdotes today. I was impressed that Sharon's won a Clio! I also liked that Bill's co-workers showed up to work dressed up as him for Halloween. Nolan "quit" his job to travel across the country. (He wasn't "let go.")
Speaking of travel, I got this triple-stumper in Into Thin Air: "Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail around the world this way, later disappeared en route to the West Indies in 1909."
I should know a little about Inside Edition - I'm subjected to its must-skip commercials every day during Jeopardy! I expected this one to be at the top of the category, not the bottom: "Inside Edition host since '95, this ex-Today Show anchor was a national celebrity spokesperson for the March of Dimes."
Two clues were left covered in the round.

My mom and I are very surprised this first clue of the round was a triple-stumper, in Books about Women: "Daphne du Maurier remembered her original idea for this book as 'a beautiful home...a first wife...jealousy....'" The next clue was the Daily Double. The scores then were the same as they'd been at the end of the Jeopardy round. Sharon wagered 2000 on this clue: "After this book was released in 1997, Mineko Iwasaki, on whom it was based, sued for defamation." Surprise, I've tried this book too. And I got this one right. Sharon seemed to have an eternity to answer, but she did not come up with it.
I even got this triple-stumper in Military Nicknames, on a buzzer-beater: "This Confederate general was known as 'Old Jube.'" And I got this triple-stumper in The 13 Colonies: "In 1665 New Haven colony merged with this colony." Then this one in the same category: "The original deed granted to Carteret & Berkeley for this colony called Nova Caesarea."
Bill found the next Daily Double in the round, in 1990s Hitmakers.

Were you guys surprised when Bill wasn't asked to be more specific on this one in Books about Women?: "'A Remarkable Woman,' about this late actress, says she saw Spencer Tracy in 'Captains Courageous' 52 times."
This came this triple-stumper in 1990s Hitmakers I'd have gotten even without Nolan and Sharon boofing it up: "This 1995 Seal hit appeared on the 'Batman Forever' soundtrack & won 3 Grammy awards." Bill put his hands up in surrender. This was the last clue of the round.

This is after Nolan's response of "antimeridiem" (pronounced with the first "i" long) was ruled incorrect after all on this one in "Di" No Y: "It's what a.m. stands for (it ends with 'm,' by the way)." I pre-called that overrule.
The Final Jeopardy category was AFI's 100 Funniest Films. This was the clue: "These 2 films were No. 1 & No. 2 on the AFI's list of funniest American films; both involve cross-dressing." My mom figured everyone got this right, but Nolan didn't. We got it instantly. Sharon doubled her score. Nolan lost 5600. Bill added 5100, like it matters. He wins and we'll see him tomorrow.
By the way, Sharon's final "okay" count is 8.
My Coryat today was a killer (for me, lately) 30000 (31400 without negs). 1990s Hitmakers helped.
