Jim Dandy

      This is it: the last day of the College Tournament. For my average Coryat this tournament to be higher than the last one's, my score needs to be a mere 43600 today. Yeah.
     Yesterday, Kristen earned 10000, Trevor earned 11000 and Jim earned 8600. They changed shirts for this episode:

     All the contestants were active in the segment before the first break. Kristen got 5 right and one wrong, and had 2800 then. Trevor had gotten 6 right and one wrong, and had 2600. Jim had gotten 3 right and had 1800.
     Mr. Trebek said he was gonna let the contestants choose what to talk about, but he didn't let Jim choose!  
     Did it bug anyone else that Kristen threw away 800 on the joke response of "vacuum," for this clue in Famous Firsts?: "In 1951 the Univac I became the U.S.A.'s first commercially available one of these." I swept the category, by the way.
     And I got this triple-stumper in Metropolitan Partners: "This city-Metairie-Kenner." (Remember Kevin Marshall?)
     The Daily Double of the round was the second-to-last clue, and Jim found it in The Work of the Clinton Foundation. He'd gotten 6 right and one wrong since the break, and had 5400. Trevor had gotten 2 right and had 3000. Kristen had gotten 3 right and the one wrong, and had 3600. Jim wisely wagered it all on this clue, read by President Clinton: "We've supplied affordable fertilizer & better quality seeds to local farmers, improving crop yields & crop prices to help this country emerge from the civil war & genocide of the 1990s."

     Jim got it right. The last clue of the round was a triple-stumper.
     I got this triple-stumper in Invertebrates: "We pray that you know the name of this family of insects is from the Greek for 'prophet.'"
     Does anyone know what the appropriate response should've been here, in Science Fiction?: "In 2010's 'Blackout,' people with this academic job are sent back from 2060 to do fieldwork in World War II." Trevor's "college professors" was negged, and Mr. Trebek took a long time to accept Jim's "history professors." Probably because the next clue was the Daily Double, in the same category. Jim then had gotten 5 right and had 15600. Trevor had gotten 4 right and the one wrong and had 7000. Kristen had gotten 3 right and had 6000. He wagered 5000 on this clue: "This 1954 Richard Matheson novel has inspired such films as 'The Last Man on Earth' & a 2007 Will Smith movie." I said what Jim did and felt good about it! We were wrong though. There were 3 full categories plus one clue left.
     Kristen found the next Daily Double in Biblical Geography, though I think Jim was looking for it. Kristen got the one preceding correct of course, giving her 7600. Jim still had 10600 and Trevor still had 7000. Kristen wagered 3000 on this clue. (You have to read rather than listen for the beginning of the clue. Sorry. Not to be negative but it was a big pain-in-the-butt to put it here at all.):

     I was stunned that this was a triple-stumper, in Dorm Debates: "This activity AKA bussing -- eyes open or closed? We need more research." Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning here. We didn't see 3 clues in Will Ferrell Movies by Quote, and I for one am relieved. At the end of the round then, Kristen had gotten 4 right and one wrong after her Daily Double and had 8600. Trevor had gotten 2 right and had 8200. Jim had gotten 2 right also and had 14200.
     The Final Jeopardy category was The Civil War. This was the clue: "The last of the 11 southern states to secede from the union, it borders 6 of them." I said what Kristen did and again, felt good about it. Enough so that I didn't try to come up with anything else. We were wrong, though. Jim was the only one to get this right. He added 11789 today, while Trevor lost 3601 and Kristen lost 4199. Jim's two-day total was 34589, Trevor's was 15599, and Kristen's was 14401. Did you guys hear Mr. Trebek go, "Back to our regular shows tomorrow. MONDAY!"
     So we'll see Jim in the next ToC. I think he'll be a force to be reckoned with. Here's the updated list but first, my Coryat today was only 16800 (19400 without negs). So my average this time was *gulp* 23920.      Furthermore, I checked back and didn't get a single Final Jeopardy right this week. The jboard poll's gonna suck for me.
