Yesterday, Patrick Geary won for the first time. His opponents today were David Brown and Sarah Orzalli. I have pictures but for some reason they haven't arrived in my e-mail, and I'm not willing to wait.
Thank goodness I was up and at the TV at 4:30 today - for some reason my recording didn't start. I checked, and the rest of the week wasn't set to record either. But the series recording resumed on Monday next week. ???
I love lattes, so I was pleased to see Thanks a Latte. Apparently Mr. Trebek doesn't drink lattes; he pronounced it "lotty"! I didn't sweep though - I didn't get "decaffeinated" (a triple-stumper) or "Silk." I did get this triple-stumper that I would think was overvalued at 1K: "Starbucks adds a sweet syrup to make this type of latte named for cooked sugar." Maybe they should've said "flavor" instead of "type"?
David started hot, getting 4/5 in A Son of Jacob. At the first break:
Patrick 1400 (2 right)
David 4200 (8 right)
Sarah 1200 (2 right)
I got the impression David didn't know where Mr. Trebek was going with the interview when he said "He started on our program today like a house on fire." Mr. Trebek then said David's mother was on the show. David said this was 3-4 years ago, and she ended Double Jeopardy in the red! I wonder if this is his mother. Later Mr. Trebek said she was in the audience. I didn't like how David be satisfied with just making it to Final Jeopardy.
I was proud of how I did in Reality Checks despite never watching any of the shows. I got this triple-stumper: "$516.32 was the top prize for contestants on this Chuck Barris 'talent' show." It bugs me when Mr. Trebek says contestants are "too young to remember" something. What about all the history and literature that contestants are tested on?
I also got this triple-stumper in the category: "John Anderson & John Henson host this ABC show that gives $50,000 to its winners (& hopefully some aspirin, too)." Then I was annoyed when I didn't pull the trigger on this triple-stumper: "David Hasselhoff helped put $1 mil. in the pocket of insurance salesman/opera singer Neal Boyd on this show."
David found the Daily Double in A Useful Category. It was the second-to-last clue in the round.
Patrick 1400 (One right and one wrong)
David 6600 (4 right)
Sarah 1800 (One right)
David wagered 1000 on this clue: "A common type of this home safety device invented in the 1960s works by identifying changes in air ionization." He got it right. David got the last clue of the round correct too.
Patrick 1400
David 7800
Sarah 1800
     Talk about a wipeout!
Patrick found the first Daily Double of Double Jeopardy in CNN Historic Revolutions. (Each clue was read by a CNN correspondent.)
Patrick 2200 (One right)
David 7800
Sarah 2200 (One right)
Patrick wagered it all on this clue, read by Dan Rivers: "On June 24, 1932 here in Bangkok a group called the promoters staged a bloodless coup which ended Thailand's absolute monarchy & led to this type of monarchy named for a document." He and I got it right. I thought maybe the tide was turning when Patrick then picked up the next clue after David negged on it. Patrick got the next clue right too. Then Mr. Trebek wasted a lot of time effusing about CNN. Then David negged again and Patrick picked it up. Patrick had 8400 then and David had 5800.
David found the next Daily Double in Bard "M"en. Since Patrick's Daily Double:
Patrick 8400 (3 right)
David 10600 (6 right and 2 wrong)
Sarah 3000 (One right)
David wagered 2000 on this clue: "The name of this steward in 'Twelfth Night' is an approximation of the Italian for 'ill will.'" David and I got it right. People applauded again after David got the last clue in the category right. David swept Within Limitations too, and it was all the more painful for Patrick because he negged on the 2K clue before David got it right. And Patrick appeared to be trying to ring in a lot.
There were 9 clues left when Mr. Trebek gave the one-minute warning. Three clues were left covered. If Patrick would've gotten all of those right, David wouldn't have a lock on the game.
Patrick 6800 (2 right and 2 wrong)
David 22200 (7 right and one wrong)
Sarah 3000
The Final Jeopardy category was Oscar-Winning Actors. Mr. Trebek said "You're gonna love this clue": "They're the only 2 best actor winners with the same last name; one was a winner for 1979 & 1988, the other for 2005." Strangely, I notice when looking up the spelling of one of the actors that his birthday is today! I didn't have a decent guess on this clue. It was a triple-stumper. Sarah lost 2900, Patrick lost 6799 and David didn't wager anything. Refreshing. He's redeemed himself in my eyes! I like Patrick though and I'm sorry to see him go.
My Coryat today was 22000 (24000 without the neg).
