HERE'S YOUR REPORT CARD
2 Ds & AN F!
Cathy got the $200 clue in TV TEACHERS, went over to GENERAL SCIENCE, and then ran that to jump into the lead! At the first break, the scores were:
Cathy $5,200
Mary $3,000
Colin $200
Back to the game, Colin left an S off the title of this REPORT CARD clue (Debuting in 1936, this product-evaluating magazine had 24 black & white pages with, of course, no ads).
The Daily Double came in at WOODEN PLOTS $400, and after Cathy selected it, they took back the money from Colin's aforementioned response! Thus, Cathy bet with the following scores:
Cathy $9,400
Mary $4,000
Colin -$600
Cathy bet $4,000. Her clue, as she openly crossed her fingers: This kids' book opens with Mole "spring-cleaning his little home". Her correct response put her at $13,400!
At the end of the round, the scores were:
Cathy $13,400
Mary $5,400
Colin $400
DJ! round categories:
AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY
SEAS THE DAY
FOREIGN WORDS & PHRASES
ON A LAST NAME BASIS
SCULPTURE
SONGS OF WINE & ROSES
I ran SONGS OF WINE & ROSES at home!
FOREIGN WORDS & PHRASES $1600 had the first Daily Double; this was Cathy's as well! Scores:
Cathy $16,600
Mary $7,000
Colin $5,200
Cathy bet $5,000. Her clue: It's the Italian world for "you're welcome", not "you're with child". She could not come up with a response and fell to $11,600.
This gave Cathy's opponents an opening, and Colin got to the last Daily Double in SEAS THE DAY $1600! Scores:
Cathy $11,600
Mary $7,800
Colin $6,800
Colin bet $2,000. His clue: Both Aussies & Kiwis refer to this sea between their countries as "the ditch". Colin said the Queensland Sea and fell to $4,800.
A pair of Triple Stumpers in SCULPTURE that I picked up: This Brit's works are on display throughout the U.S., including his "Double Standing Figure" at Vassar College -- he has a lot of work on display at the Art Gallery of Ontario as well! I then got $2000: This Romanian-born sculptor created 27 works featuring birds, inclding 16 versions of "Bird in Space".
Scores going into Final:
Cathy $16,800
Mary $8,600
Colin $6,400
FJ! category: REFERENCE BOOK MAKERS
FJ! clue: In 1863 he used the epigraph "I have gathered...other men's flowers, & nothing but the thread that binds them is mine own"
Colin 6400 - 2300 = 4100
Mary 8600 - 8600 = 0
Cathy 16800 - 1000 = 15800
So Cathy, who barely stayed in the tournament, played an awesome game to reach the Final! Proving that all you need is to be in the game to have a shot!
The final starts tomorrow!
