Andy here with the recap of this game!

Today's quarterfinalists: Rani Peffer, Andrew, Moore, and Arthur Chu!

J! round categories:
US CITY NICKNAMES
WEIGHTS & MEASURES
LITERARY AWARDS
CROSSWORD CLUES "M"
ABOVE
& BEYONCE

Right before the game I saw the following:

I think Ben might be directionally challenged -- going top to bottom so didn't happen. It went more left-to-right! Arthur and Andrew went across the categories, going through 6, 8, 4, and 10 first!

A lot of Triple Stumpers early on -- I noted this one (ABOVE $1000) early on: In the original language, these first 4 words of the anthem written in 1841 put 1 country "above all". Andrew went for "God Save The Queen" and lost $1,000 -- whereas Arthur actually rang in with no response and lost $1,000 himself!

The last clue selected before the break was LITERARY AWARDS $1000. Andrew got to play the clue with the following scores:
Andrew $2,600
Arthur $2,600
Rani $800

Andrew bet just $1,000. Alex even commented later on that Andrew went conservative!

Andrew's clue: Though dead almost 20 years, she won a 1982 Pulitzer for her "Collected Poems". Andrew's correct response put his score at $3,600 and the game into the first break!

Rani was wearing her lucky earrings again! After appearing on Jeopardy!, she knocked a couple of more items off her bucket list: touring the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and taking tap dance lessons (she won't quit her day job, though!)

Andrew's new house has a lot of kitchen space -- his wife is a great cook!

Arthur lost 30 pounds since his appearance! He was also animated supervillain in Taiwan (the Taiwan Animators). Unfortunately, no money from it!

The first clue out of the break saw Arthur take a foul-tip neg (Beyonce $1,000: Jay Z is featured on this Beyonce song that mentions "that liquor get into me") -- he said "On" instead of "In" in the title -- Andrew picked up the rebound!

Later on, Andrew got confused by a clue in ABOVE and took a neg (Arthur picked up the rebound): Rumors led Caesar to divorce his wife, who we now proverbially say "must be above" this

Scores after 30:
Arthur $4,400
Andrew $4,400
Rani $2,600

Double Jeopardy categories:
OPERA MAN
ALL THE PRESIDENTS' CHILDREN
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
VOWEL, CONSONANT X3
THE CASPIAN SEA
SUPERMAN TO HER LOIS LANE

Andrew found the first Daily Double under THE CASPIAN SEA $1600!

Scores:
Andrew $5,600
Arthur $5,200
Rani $4,600

Andrew bet $2,000 this time! His clue: The Caspian's southern shoreline borders this country at the foot of the Elburz Mountains. Andrew went for Georgia and fell to 3rd place, $3,600.

Festivals 1600 was a surprising Triple Stumper -- if only because of the opening line of "Smoke On The Water" -- In July 2014 this resort town on Lake Geneva jazzed things up hosting its 48th annual jazz festival

The Superman category was giving our contestants difficulty as well!

Festivals 1200 (This Japanese city & onetime Winter Olympic host, also a beer name, has a festival featuring snow sculptures) was a Triple Stumper I got -- because that beer has a brewery about a 10 minutes' walk from me!

Meanwhile, Arthur was doing very well on the buzzer and jumped into a big lead! Presidents $1200 had the final Daily Double, and it because Mr. Chu's to play!

Scores:
Arthur $15,200
Andrew $4,400
Rani $2,200

Arthur bet $3,000. His clue: In 1999 People Magazine said his "death left unbearable pain, unfulfilled promise". Arthur's instant correct response put him at $18,200!

Arthur, having a large lead, coasted slightly heading into the line -- but he didn't need to take to many chances!

Score going into Final:
Arthur $21,000
Andrew $5,200
Rani $3,800

FJ category: THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY

FJ! clue: As of 2013, this 3-letter verb common in sports, theatre & politics has the largest entry in the online OED

Rani 3800 + 3799 = 7599
Andrew 5200 - 5199 = 1
Arthur 21000 + 0 = 21000

(I said "set". Oops.) Arthur's the second semifinalist!

Wild Card standings:
Rebecca Rider $11,600
Rani Peffer $7,599
Andrew Moore $1
John Pearson $0
